On the 27th of May 2006, a powerful earthquake caused considerable damage and loss of life around the city of Yogyakarta, on the island of Java in Indonesia. Yogyakarta is one of the center of Javanese culture. As an Indonesian government scholarship student, I studied Javanese dance at ISI (Indonesia Institute of the Arts Yogyakarta) and Sasminta Mardawa Dance Foundation commonly known as Pujokusuman, in which not only Japanese students but also many of other foreign students studied Javanese dance and were given the opportunity to perform on the stage. Both ISI and Pujokusuman are seriously damaged by the Earthquake. Now Pujokusuman is faced to be critical situation.
Most of their instruments and costumes now remain buried under rubble.Because Pujokusuman is a private dance company,we, the former students, are concerned about its laggard restoration. We decided to create a special committee that will oversee the restoration of Pujokusman in collaboration with those who understand and agree with our efforts.
Pujokusman, whose source of income have been through the provision of routine performances for tourists, has been under financial pressure prior to the Earthquake due to the decrease of tourists caused by civil unrest, monetary crisis and terrorism in Indonesia since 1999. Through the activities of the Sasminta Mardawa Dance Foundation, dalem Pujokusuman has become an important educative center for the court and classical dance community, as well as a cultural hub for guests who wish to see quality classical dance performances. We believe that the restoration of Pujokusman is important not only for the Javanese traditional performing arts but also to preserve an important cultural heritage for the Yogyakarta citizens.

Pujokusuman is the name of the modest royal family compound located several hundreds meters east of the Palace of Yogyakarta. Most of the buildings known as nDalem Ageng of the area are made of wood. Gamelan instruments and costumes are kept in the central building “Pringgitan”.
Dance performances and local rituals take place at the special pavilion known as the “Pendapa”. Ndalem Pujokusuman is the resident of the late Prince Pujokusuma (son of Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono VIII) and family and houses the activities of Sasminta Mardawa Dance foundation. The late KRT Sasmintadipuro, younger brother of Princess Pujokusumo and gifted choreographer established his dance company at dalem Pujokusuman in 1962.
The company's activities have contributed to the preservation of classical court dance and have contributed to the numerous professional dancers who now teach at arts institutions such as ISI, SMKI and UNY. Most of the dances seen performed at the palace, Indonesian Institue of the Arts, High School for Performing Arts and other performances targeted for tourists were all arranged by the dance maestro KRT Sasmintadipura. Their primary activities include routine performances at their venue twice a week, performances at the palace, municipal festivals as well as national and international tours. Their teaching program includes students that range from children to adults for a very modest rate. Through education activities and routine performances, the company aims to maintain, improve and develop their dance education facilities, with a view to extend cultural and artistic values to future generations.

Objectives
We would like to support the following efforts as soon as possible:
1. restoration of the main building - "Pringgitan"
2. reparations of gamelan instruments and costumes
3. restoration of the main pavilion - the "Pendapa"
4. restoration of the dressing room and office
5. provision of a temporary space for the company's dance activities

In order to maintain the tradition, it is necessary to begin the dance activities as soon as possible. In addition, to support the economic livelihood of the dancers, teachers and musicians.

How We Will Support this Effort:
1.Collect funds for the restoration of Pujokusuman
2.Organizing events for raising funds
3.Request donations to concert and Javanese dance performance audiences

The funds will be compiled to a bank acount set aside for our committee who will versee the restoration. After discussing the restoration plans with the dance company, the funds will be sent to them accordingly. All activities used by our funds will be accounted for through a written report.
